The Theories of Sex and Gender Essay -- Comparison Compare

The Theories of Sex and Gender Sex and gender are two very separate factors in the count of how gender acquisition occurs. Sex is a biological fact determined by the chromosomes inherited from parents. Gender however, refers to the behaviour, beliefs, attitude and sense of identity that society perceives as being appropriate for either a male or a female, and therefore gender is regarded as a social fact. MOGHADDAM (1998, as cited in HARALAMBOS et al, 2002). in that location are four main theories in the gender acquisition debate, Evolutionary Psychology, Psychoanalytical Theory, well-disposed Learning Theory and Cognitive-development Theory. This paper aims to describe and evaluate Social Learning Theory and Cognitive-development Theory. Social Learning theorists believe the development of gender occurs as a result of a kids social endure and think much of this learning can be explained by conditioning and observational learning. Sex- proc edure and gender behaviours are learned in the same way as any other behaviour. In terms of conditioning, parents socialise their children, preparing them for adult gender roles by providing them with gender-appropriate toys. In many societies girls are given dolls and cooking equipment in supply for the maternal and domestic aspects of their adult gender role. BANDURA & WALTERS (1963, as cited in HARALAMBOS et al, 2002) Social Learning theorists also think that children learn gender roles from same sex role models such as parents, peers, teachers and media figures who provide children with opportunities to observe and imitate behaviours, this is known as observational learning. O... ...r cognitive and motivational factors. This new theory, Social Cognitive Theory, suggests that a child has its own ability to regulate his/her own activities according to the rules of gender appropriate behaviour. This compounds Social Learning Theory with C ognitive Development Theory and shows a move from parental control over this process to an understanding that children actively evaluate situations and adapt their behaviour accordingly. This more recent theory aims to broaden and combine earlier approaches and to develop them further. Great Barrier Reef :: essays research papers

One topic that came to mind while researching this paper was the Great Barrier Reef, which I had wanted to research for my presentation, but information was more considerable for the topic I did choose. The size of the reef and its tourist potential argon great in their respective ways. The reef is the largest of its kind extending 2300 km along the northwest East Coast of Australia from Cape York to the northern part of South Queensland. Most may believe that the reef alone is one large organism, but is amazingly a network of roughly 2900 individual reefs to form one large reef that is roughly the size of the U.K. The remains of what are called polyps form the reef. New polyps mystify everyday, which means that the reef is growing still today. The dead polyps form the white structures of the reef while the live polyps give it its color. For the reef to survive, the waters or so it moldiness be greater than 18 degrees Centigrade, the sunlight must be able to penetrate the water, and the water must be clean and salty. As I express previously, this is the most extensive reef system anyw here in the world. It is also the largest structure that is made completely of living organisms. It is the breeding area of a get of marine life and endangered species. The humpback whale travels here from the Antarctic to give birth to their young. Also, six of the seven species of sea turtle travel here to breed on the reef. The entire ref is a marine park with zones that have different uses of water activities with the exception of fishing or collecting. These activities extend to the positive life in the reef. The corals are an animal in the jellyfish family, but they contain a solid limestone skeleton. During the day, the coral put themselves into the form of the skeleton to mask as a rock to hide from their predators. The plants of the reef are not very visible, but are important food to the life that lives on and around the reef. They produce sugars through photosynth esis, which the coral absorb for up to 90% of their food. The corals provide shelter for the plants and are a good source of carbon dioxide. There are also over 1500 different kinds of fish that call the reef home, and each had their own job to keep the reef healthy.

Review of Rudy Tomedi’s No Bugles No Drums :: Rudy Tomedi Bugles Drums Essays

Review of Rudy Tomedis No Bugles No Drums Rudy Tomedi presents his audience with a different view of the Korean warfare ane that is up close and psycheal. The oral histories told through edited transcripts in No Bugles No Drums An Oral History of the Korean War, show the reader the Korean War through the eyes of the men who were active in combat. However, as Tomedi puts it, firsthand accounts have their limitations, but they also catch things that often fall through the cracks of a conventional history (Tomedi, vi). Tomedi provides his reader with a short background of the situation, placing the interviewee into context within the war. This ultimately gives the reader a little insight into the position the person was in and clarifies some parts of the following interview. One limitation Tomedis declare has is that it is very subjective, allowing the reader to only see a portion of the war through a single persons view. For manakin Fred Lawson, an interviewee, stated We has no idea what was happening over on the other side of the circumstances (Tomedi, 87). Tomedi does not present his readers with a story of what was happening over the mountain. The book also neglects various perspectives, such as officers and women in the war. The compilation of stories strictly focuses on combat veterans, many of whom did not know what was going on they were simply a bunch of kidstrying to do their job (Tomedi, 8). Despite these minor flaws, the book has many positive aspects to it. Probably most important, the book gives the reader an up close and personal account to the war. Each battle comes alive for the reader as a veteran vividly describes what he experienced. For example Vincent Walsh describes his first encounter with a violent death as follows we had occasion to pick up a dead pilot. They fingerprinted him and then he was wrapped in a piece of canvas and he went into a meat box (Tomedi, 155). Lines such as this, puts a personality behind the speake r and makes it more personal. Also, the stories in the book present the same situations as other oral history novels. A good example of this is when Robert Roy claims I could see a line of tanks coming down the road, which we never expectedI could see the rounds explode against the tank, but the tank just unbroken going (Tomedi, 10-11).

Older Workers Essay -- Employment Jobs Essays

Older WorkersThe aging of the U.S. population is affecting the demographics of the practice force. Between 2000 and 2010, the time group experiencing the greatest emersion will be those aged 55-64 by 2005, people aged 55 and over are projected to be nearly 20% of the working age population, compared to 12.5% in 1990 (Barber, Crouch, and Merker 1992 Barth, McNaught, and Rizzi 1993). For a number of reasons, including financial need, longer life expectancy, and a desire to continue working, the number of individuals aged 55 and over in the work force is continuing to grow (Hall and Mirvis 1994). It is no longer unusual for individuals to retire from one job, begin drawing a pension, and seek new employment since 1984, some(prenominal) the full- and part-time work of retired men younger than age 65 has increased noticeably (Herz 1995). At the same time that the number of older persons available for and unforced to work is increasing, the workplace is changing as businesses seek to become more competitive. The most notable changes include downsize, increased use of technology, and less-hierarchical work structures that use teams. As a result of technological changes and greater dependence on teams, learn and retraining are hallmarks of todays workplace. Older workers have not fared particularly well during these changes. During the downsizing that took place from 1986 through 1991, proportionately more older workers were laid off, and, at the expense of retraining existing employees--especially older workers--firms spend more on training new entrants (Hall and Mirvis 1994). Muslim Girls :: essays research papers

The central Bosnian village Dolina is located in a valley magnetic north of the Bosnian-Hercegovinian capital, Sarejevo. From a very early age Muslim girls are taught that their role as a female is to assist their mother with household chores and to serve the men. darn her male siblings, who spend most of their time playing and walking around the village, are not expected to work around the house (Bringa 106). Muslim boys were assumption privileges because they were male. Muslim women usually did not leave the household for employment because they maintained the household agriculture, however they could sew and knit for other villagers. Womens work chiefly consisted of tending to the garden where they grew the vegetables for household consumption. The women also did the milking and the processing of cheese (Bringa 52-4). The busiest part of a Muslim cleaning womans day was in the morning when she did the cookery and the cleaning. A womens daily routine, which includes social cal ls to her neighbors, know as coffee visits, revolves around both her children and husbands schedule. A woman was expected to be home whenever her husband was home (Bringa 87-8). The daily interaction between neighboring households occurs mainly through the womens coffee visits. During the coffee visits the women are expected to countenance Muslim community values so as not to damage the reputation of their household (Bringa 91). Tone Bringa wrote as a wife a womans behavior was judged in relation to her behavior within the neighborhood and village, and in terms of her critical role as representative of the moral rest of her household on a daily basis(105). Women determine and maintain the environment that exists within the household while the men are the providers of material internality (Bringa 86). The men spend most of their time working outside the village in nearby market towns or in the industrial suburbs of Sarajevo. Some of the most common jobs include bricklayer, welder, carpenter, electrician, car mechanic, warden, and lorry driver (Bringa 51). Fontana del Re is a poverty stricken neighborhood in Naples, Itlay. Just like in the Bosnian village of Dolina, the women of Fontana del Re, Naples tend to stay close to home while the men leave the area to find work. Life in Naples is focused on the mother. doubting Thomas Belmonte wrote, the mother is at the center because she controls and distributes the twin sources of human vitality, food and love (89).
